Please let us know if you’ve included a gift for Horizons in your will or trust or by beneficiary designation. Providing us with documentation is the best way to ensure that your gift is used in the way you intend.
A gift in your will or trust is a simple, flexible, and versatile way to create your legacy in the march for full equality, so that LGBTQ people and our families can live with pride, dignity, justice, and joy.
Here are some popular ways to leave a gift for Horizons:
- A general gift in your will leaves a gift of a stated sum of money in your will or living trust, typically in the form of personal property or assets.
- A residual gift in your will leaves Horizons the remainder of your estate after other bequests, debts, and taxes have been fulfilled.
- A specific gift in your will leaves Horizons a specific dollar amount or stated fraction of your estate or a specified item (collections, art, books, jewelry, and so on.)
- A contingent gift in your will leaves Horizons a stated share of your estate only if a spouse, family member or other beneficiary does not survive you.

A gift from your retirement plan, insurance plan, or other asset is an act of caring for LGBTQ people everywhere, so that we can live without fear, without hiding, and without injustice.
Retirement funds gift: This option is popular with many. When you designate Horizons as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, you give the gift that reduces your taxes, costs you nothing now, and moves us closer to full equality.
Benefits to you:
- Reduce or eliminate taxes on retirement assets
- Remove highly taxable assets from your estate by direct beneficiary designation
- Reduce or avoid probate fees
- No cost to you now to give
- Creates your Legacy of Pride
To name Horizons as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, contact your bank or insurance company to see whether a change of beneficiary form must be completed.
Savings bonds: If you have bonds that have stopped earning interest and that you plan to redeem, you will owe income tax on the appreciation. In the end, your heirs will receive only a fraction of the value of the bonds in which you invested. Since Horizons is a tax-exempt institution, naming us as a beneficiary means that 100 percent of your gift will go toward securing the rights of LGBTQ people and creating a world of full equality.
CDs, bank accounts, brokerage accounts and commercial annuities: This is one of the easiest and most effective ways to spark real cultural change for our community. Naming Horizons as the beneficiary of a certificate of deposit, a checking or savings bank account, or a brokerage account creates your legacy of pride, ensuring a safe, happy future for LGTBQ people and our children.
Donor-Advised Funds (DAF) residuals: The final distribution of contributions remaining in your DAF after your lifetime can be designated when you create or update your fund.
We hope you will consider naming Horizons Foundation as a beneficiary of your account. You may even designate that Horizons Foundation receives a portion of the account value, leaving the remaining portion for your loved ones to continue your legacy of philanthropy.
A simple and powerful way to manage all of your philanthropy in one place, your DAF will allow you to support all of the specific causes and organizations that matter to you. By making charitable contributions of cash, appreciated securities, or other assets to your DAF now, you have the ability to recommend grants to Horizons Foundation both now and as part of your personal legacy.
